Driver Caught With Brass Knuckles, Slapper During Traffic Stop In Southold: Police

SOUTHOLD, NY — A Lake Grove man was arrested after he was found with brass knuckles during a traffic stop in Southold recently, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place at 8:38 a.m. on Hortons Lane and Middle Road, or County Route 48, on December 16.

While on regular patrol an officer observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Middle Road with insufficient brake lights, police said. The officer initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle and identified the driver as Robert C. Spalma, 37, police said.

During the investigation the officer found that Spalma was carrying brass knuckles and a slapper, also known as a billy, police said.

Spalma was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Spalma was processed at Southold Town police headquarters and arraigned at Southold Town Justice Court, police said.
