NORTH FORK, NY — Despite the torrential rains that soaked Long Island Sunday night, leaving many motorists stranded and needing rescue and causing heavy flooding on roads and in basements, impacts on the North Fork were minimal, said Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski.

Krupski said parts of town saw 4.6 inches "in a very short period" Sunday night. "I looked around this morning and visited the Superintendent of Highways Dan Goodwin," Krupski said. "He said the biggest issue was with new construction, and the sediment and erosion controls in some places failing."

However, Krupski said, for the most part, the town's efforts in investing in drainage have "paid off. Think of the volume of water that recharged our aquifer last night! This is decades of work, wit hcounty and state working on drainage, so the stormwater stays out of the estuaries and recharges the aquifer."
