Southold Town Notebook: Senior Center Improvements, Lifeguards Back to Work, Memorial Day

Southold Town Board members will discuss improvements to the Mattituck Senior Center and approve Memorial Day weekend activities.

With back in the saddle this week, the will meet to discuss the following issues on Tuesday during the 9 a.m. work session and 4:30 p.m. regular meeting:

  • Program and building improvements are planned for the in Mattituck. The projects will be funded by a New York State grant program and include the development of a satellite congregate nutrition program to serve more seniors living in the easternmost parts of the town. Town Board members plan to use the recreation center in Peconic to help achieve that goal. Improvements are needed at both centers will cost $26,920.
  • The board plans to pass a summer seasonal-employee pay scale at Tuesday's meeting for 2011 summer employees of the recreation department. Get ready to see lifeguards and beach attendants back on duty soon.
  • The board plans to approve Mattituck's "Sprint Into Summer" 5K run at Tuesday afternoon's meeting. The race will begin at 9 a.m. on June 12 at
  • The last of the buildings from the old campground at will be coming down soon. The board plans to approve the removal of a wooden dock and concrete block building and concrete foundation at the site. The project is funded by a grant from New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
  • Get ready for a Memorial Day parade in Mattituck on May 30 at 10:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Mattituck post of the American Legion and will start at Pike Street.
