Terrence Joyce Gallery Closes Doors, Hopes to Relocate in 2013

After five years on Main Street, Greenport painter Terrence Joyce closed the doors at his art gallery on Monday – though he said he hopes to return next year, possibly in a smaller location.

"I'm a happy camper," he said Tuesday. "But the economy is still stagnant ... I opened up right before the depression started, and it hasn't stopped yet."

With rent going up, Joyce said that while he sells plenty of art – beyond just his own, he also sold the works of other sculptors, jewelers, and other artists – it wasn't enough to keep up with the bills in the large space he occupied at 114 Main St.

A member of the village's Business Improvement District and Greenport resident, Joyce said Tuesday he still plans on actively painting and his works can still be found on his website. He's hopeful to open next year, though working through another winter wasn't feasible.

"The rent stays the same all year long," he said.

According to a Suffolk Times article, Joyce's gallery was the fourth art gallery to close its doors in recent years.
