Greenport's Old Schoolhouse Set to Reopen
The restored historic schoolhouse on the corner of Front and First streets in the village will reopen as a community center this coming Friday.

Greenport's newly renovated historic is set to open to the public on Friday.
The small structure that was originally built in 1818 and was used for decades as a one-room schoolhouse for kindergarteners from Arshamomaque, Stirling (now Greenport) and East Marion, is now the village's first historic interpretive center. The building is also intended to be used as a venue for community meetings and events.
, who is also a carpenter, and a team of village workers and volunteers have worked since last fall to restore the schoolhouse, which sat vacant for decades behind the , into a centrally located village community center.

"There's no way we could do this without volunteers," Nyce said last fall. "They've been great."
In 2005, the old schoolhouse was moved from fire department grounds to its more visible present location at Front and First Streets near . The project to renovate the structure was funded by an $85,000 matching grant from New York State.
