1. Railroad ties burst into flames for no apparent reason. Greenport Fire Department Chief Kenny White said that he thought that in the village on Wednesday might have been caused by intense sun rays focused on the dry wood. Yikes!

2. Baby tossing in Peconic Bay becomes a regular activity. Remember this photo gallery from our first heat wave in early June?

3. You sleep with an ice-stuffed towel on your chest. Come on, people with no air conditioning — you've done stranger things to get some sleep at night.

4. You can take a shower from the sweat brimming out of your hat. Ewwwww....

5. The tar that fills the cracks on Route 48 starts to bubble. Wow — now, that's hot.
