Look Back at Tappan Zee Bridge and its Effect on the Nyacks

Do you know that before the 1950s, South Nyack had an active business center which included a village hall, police station, railroad station, two groceries, two restaurants, two garages, and an antique store? 

The entire village center was located in the “canyon” that was carved out where the Thruway now passes. A strip of Route 9W was relocated west of its original path and many residential streets, like Willow Street, were destroyed.  

Over one hundred homes were also destroyed or moved to new locations in town, which greatly impacted life in South Nyack as the residents had known it. 

Our goal is to inform and educate residents about the past and what they may anticipate in the very near future during construction of the second Tappan Zee Bridge.
