In Upper Grandview, a Log Cabin on the River

Upper Grandview real estate has several claims to fame, but one of its most particular homes is on the market now—the only original log cabin in all the rivertowns.

It's tough to catch a glimpse of the cabin, located at 1007 Route 9W, from the road. The lodge—over a century old but fully renovated in 2002—has an impressive history.

John Blauvelt sold the land in 1865 to Daniel Ullman, a Union general who fought in the Civil War. Ullman conversed with Lincoln personally, and was cardinal in introducing African-American fighting regiments to the conflict.

Ullman developed parts of the property, building a winding path from the Hudson upward. The general had a predilection toward animals, too—he willed the property to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and the parcel changed hands after his death in 1892. The SPCA—one of the first organizations to combat animal abuse—sold the land. Soon after, today's log cabin was built.
