Is It Illegal For Cyclists To Ride Two Across?
Cyclists are prohibited from riding two or more on local roads

Yep—it's penned into village and state law. But in places like Piermont and Nyack——legislation doesn't prevent it from being a problem.
On Piermont Avenue/River Road—particularly the stretch between the two villages—a gaggle of cyclists slowing traffic to a crawl isn't uncommon.
"We see a very high volume of cyclists everyday," explained Michael O'Shea, chief of the . "Traffic is often delayed from the volume."

"In the summer it's more of an issue," he added. "Piermont is a tourist area—we'll see thousands of people passing through in a single day."
To combat the problem, Piermont assigns a specific officer to bicycle patrol and detail—the officer sweeps local roads to make sure bikers are obeying protocol. Violators can be fined up to $250.

"The [bicycle patrol] is to educate and enforce," O'Shea said. "Without enforcement, we can't get compliance."
