Nyack Grads Who Painted McCalman Field to Reunite

In 1982, had a problem.

A fiscal crunch hit the district; the annual budget didn't pass. And the football stadium at McCalman Field needed a fresh coat of paint—badly.

But Nyack students weren't keen on their home-base falling into disrepair, so they shouldered the job themselves.

"The only option was to do it on our own," recalled William Serratore, who was a senior at the time.

Serratore teamed up with then-class president Derek Davis and about 35 other students over a two week period to get the job done. Davis is the one who designed the Indian head logo.

The first task was raising funds for supplies.

"We held bake sales, can drives, school dances—anything we could do," Serratore said.

Help also came from on Main Street, which pitched in brushes and rollers.

"They gave us a steep discount on paint, too," Serratore said.

Now, the ad hoc alums are reuniting to catch up and recollect their community service. On the weekend of June 22, graduates will hit and the village's downtown.

"There's a lot of buzz," Serratore said."A good majority of classmates are coming to the event."

Already on the list are Davis, who's coming down from Boston, and another classmate who's flying in from Switzerland.

Serratore noted the stadium has had some upkeep since his brush got to work, but not everything is changed.

"Last time I check, it was still red and black," he said.
