Nyack Schools: Parent Bullying Program Monday

Nyack School District is committed to taking serious, proactive steps to curb bullying, a problem that is found in schools everywhere. For the past several years the elementary and Middle Schools have implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention program which promotes an anti bullying culture in the buildings. 

The Middle School’s efforts this year have focused on raising greater awareness about bullying and cyber bullying with both students and parents. On Monday, February 4 the message will be powerfully presented to students and parents by John Halligan.

The program will be presented to Nyack students in daytime assemblies – 9-10:20 AM, 11:30-12:15 PM.

The program will be presented to Middle and High School parents in an evening meeting at 7 p.m. at the High School.

Halligan will relay his own tragic experience as a Dad whose 13 year old son took his own life in 2003, after incessant bullying by peers since the 5th grade, both in school and online. His story is riveting and reminds students that there is a face, a person, a heart, on the other end of the computer screen.

The students and parents will gain a perspective from inside a family of a child who was a victim of bullying and cyber bullying. They will also gain awareness about the signs and risk of teenage suicide and how best to help a friend. A question and answer period will be part of the program.
