O&R Opens $16M Substation in West Nyack

A new, $16.7 million O&R substation opened in West Nyack Tuesday with the goal of expanding and improving electrical capabilities to homeowners and merchants, power officials told Patch.

The substation is located on 2.7 acres on 19 Snake Hill Road, between the Congers substation and other West Nyack substation. The electrical load in this area has increased significantly in recent years, O&R officials said, and the two existing plants currently serve over 20,000 residential and commercial customers.

"In a way, what we are really talking about here today is the opening of a new business in town," O&R President and CEO Bill Longhi said. "It’s a business that processes and delivers electricity just like Federal Express processes and delivers packages."

The plant will contribute $574,340 in taxes annually to the Rockland County, Clarkstown and schools. O&R has spent more than $640 million over the past 10 years on electric system reliability projects, Longhi said.
