Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Taulman, 95

Mary Elizabeth Taulman, who was known for her humorous and indomitable spirit, passed away on July 25.

She was born in 1918 and was a lifelong resident of Nyack. As a Nyack High School student, Taulman competed in basketball, field hockey and baseball. She also toured the country as an Army wife during World War II.

Known as a "trailblazer", Taulman opened her own small department store in 1947 in Piermont called “Mary’s Shop. Her love of bowling landed her the role of President of the Women’s Bowling Association and in 1988 was inducted into Rockland’s Bowling Hall of Fame.

She also worked at AT&T for many years and retired as a telephone supervisor; was an avid member of the Congers Senior Citizen Center and bingo player; and rarely missed a family get-together.

“Throughout her life, Mary always found a way to make others love her and laugh with her,” said Taulman’s obituary. “She will be sorely missed.”

Her daughter JoEllen; grandchildren Eric, Jason and Philip; great grand-children Arielle, Austin, Sophie, Levi, Areilyn and Adin; son and daughter in-laws; and nieces and nephews survive her. Her husband Carl and daughter Carol Ann predecease her.

Visiting is on Monday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Hannemann Funeral Home in Nyack. Service is on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the interment to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.
