ORANGETOWN, NY — President George Bush said in his inaugural address, "I ask you to be citizens. Citizens, not spectators. Citizens, not subjects. Responsible citizens building communities of service and a nation of character."

There are plenty of upcoming chances to help tend to our democracy close to the roots. Several public meetings are scheduled for this week that affect Pearl River.

On the agenda: six applications for removal of a single tree; recommendation to the village board that a property may seek Building Department approval for removing a significant tree three times in a calendar year without having to go through the Planning Board; site plan application for an addition and conversion from an office building to a 4-unit residential building at 42 Burd St.
