Weekend Sports Recap: Dangerous Waters and a Flawless Victory

Saturday afternoon was a successful away game for Nyack High School's varsity football team. Nyack trounced Spring Valley in the season opener, coming away with a clean 28-0 victory. And the head coach—Nyack dignitary John Castellano—wasn't even the one on the sidelines dishing out advice and pep-talks. Read more about the game (and check out photos) here.
Saturday was also big day for Nyack, Piermont and Rockland rowers: the River Rowing Association competed in the Hudson 25K, a grueling and sometimes dangerous race that takes boaters from the Tappan Zee Bridge to the George Washington Bridge. Sunday was South Nyack's arduous 10 miles foot race, a marathon that saw nearly 500 competitors finish and more than a few rivalries. South Nyack resident and road-runner connoisseur Art Gunther, Jr. ended up claiming first; the 39-year-old runner beat out several younger contestants. Read the full story here.
Also in sports: Nyack High School's JV football team defeated Spring Valley. Powered by fullback Khalid Shabazz's two touchdowns and one by halfback Kevin Mitchell, Nyack JV defeated their opponents 18-6. Head coach Scott Reynolds and assistant Jim Seifert also noted the performances of safety Rob Blum, who had two interceptions, and defensive end DeShawn Rodriguez, who had eight tackles and a pair of sacks. JV is back in action on Sept. 20 when they visit Eastchester in an afternoon game.
