Piermont to Beautify Parking Areas

The village government is planning to plant flora in the North Parking Lot

Who said parking lots can't be beautiful?

Piermont's North Parking Lot—the area between the library and Parelli Park—will soon be receiving an aesthetic makeover.

The lot—which now features only grass and gravel between parking aisles—will soon have two types of plants put in to beautify the area. The village selected Northern Sea Oats and Soft Rush as the appropriate flora due to their price and properties (neither plant exceeds three feet in height, and they require little to no maintenance).

Funds for the project will come from the parks department, and the total price tag is not to exceed $2,000.

The village also opted to install the plants through volunteer work by high school students seeking community service or Boy Scouts, as professional planters could cost upwards of $3,000.

"I like the idea of the plants," said trustee Mark Blomquist. "But given the financial restraints of the village, we should find volunteers."

The planting process is expected to take place in September and/or October, and last approximately two days.
