1. Syracuse to begin killing deer in targeted neighborhoods next week (syracuse.com) — Syracuse will begin its next deer cull on December 15, a program heavily funded by Onondaga County to cut crashes, protect green space, and reduce tick-borne disease. USDA sharpshooters will work only at night on approved, closed sites, and all venison will be donated to the Food Bank of Central New York. Residents can report suspicious activity, volunteer as deer diarists, or offer eligible properties for management.

2. Residents turn out in opposition to huge housing project proposed due to Micron (syracuse.com) — A 436-unit housing development tied to anticipated Micron-driven growth is being proposed off Ball Road in the town of Onondaga, and more than 75 residents packed Town Hall to push back. Neighbors raised concerns about blasting rock, runoff, traffic, prices, and quality of life as the town board weighs a rezoning request that would determine whether the project can proceed.

3. Onondaga County's top health official is concerned about the low rate of flu vaccinations (wrvo.org) — Onondaga County’s health commissioner is warning that flu vaccination rates have dropped to just 27% locally, even as cases climb across Central New York. She’s especially worried about older adults, who face higher risks of hospitalization and death. Residents over six months old are urged to get vaccinated now, before holiday gatherings, for the best protection.

4. Long-time GOP county legislator seeks state assembly seat (waer.org) — A long-serving Onondaga County legislator, Dave Knapp, is running for the 126th Assembly District seat, emphasizing his deep local farming roots and work on the county agriculture council. He’s campaigning on agricultural self-sufficiency, affordability, and concerns about state mandates for all-electric homes before infrastructure is upgraded. No other candidates have formally entered the race yet.

5. Hobart to host scrimmage and free basketball clinic for kids (fingerlakes1.com) — Young hoop fans connected to Onondaga can see Onondaga Community College scrimmage Hobart College on January 3, then join a free skills clinic.
