By chance, Sleepy Hollow officer Vince Lombardi and his canine 'Gunner' were on their way home when they heard the Croton police hotline go out about a man on the run.
Sleepy Hollow Police Lieutenant Anthony Bueti said it was a matter of "coincidence" that the SHPD's canine unit was in the Croton area when the Croton force could use its help.
On May 17 at 4:28 p.m., Croton police alerted area forces that a suspect had fled on foot after allegedly stealing from the Shop-Rite supermarket.
Bueti said the canine unit was able to track the alleged thief to where he was found "hiding under a bunch of brush in a swampy, wooded area" behind the grocery store.Â
Police were then able to arrest the man without further incident, who was charged with larceny and possession of stolen property.
Bueti believed this discovery wouldn't have been easy without the dog, as the area was "heavily wooded there."
