Croton-Harmon High School Names 2016 Valedictorian

Valedictorian Duncan McManus will be attending Brown University.

Duncan McMcanus, Croton-Harmon High School’s Class of 2016 valedictorian, is described by his school counselor Tanya Thibideau as “exceptional.”

“He is a vibrant member of our school community and is regarded in high esteem by faculty and peers alike,” Thibideau said. “Not only is he a stellar student, he is kind, clever, mature and extremely ambitious.”

While McManus’s ambition has resulted in outstanding academic results, Thibideau pointed out that he is not competitive with his peers, and in fact, is a excellent collaborator. He credits the school’s small community and collaborative atmosphere for fostering a supportive environment among his peers.

He has served as a member of the school’s Student-Faculty Congress for four years (this year, he is vice president), is president of the school’s Pi Squad, is a member of the Chinese and Spanish clubs and has also participated in C.A.C.T.I. competitions.

“My favorite classes have probably been physics – which I took last year and this year,” McMcanus said. “It’s also probably my strongest subject.”

In addition, he is passionate about coding and enrolled in a competitive summer program at Cornell University last year. McManus performed in this year’s spring musical and enjoys performing with a local improv comedy group outside of school.

McManus will take his talents to the Brown University campus in the fall, where he plans to major in computer science, with a possible double major in physics.
