Croton-Harmon MS Students Kick Off Advisory Program

Pierre Van Cortlandt MS students displayed school spirit and support for each other.

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY - Croton-Harmon’s Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School students cheered for their teachers and administrators and demonstrated school spirit at the school’s annual kickoff assembly for the Advisory program on September 2.

A group of seventh- and eighth-grade students, along with Assistant Principal Michael Plotkin, set the tone for the new school year by sharing some inspiring words with their peers.

“One of the things that makes PVC Middle School different than other schools is a level of care here that is unusually encouraging,” the students said. “Teachers and staff members care about their students and students care about the adults in their lives. Just as important is that students care about one another at PVC.”

The older students encouraged their classmates to respect one another and contribute to making the school “a place that feels like home because it is our home.”

New students learned that they will be participating in the advisory program regularly, which will allow them to partner with faculty who can help them address important issues in their lives unrelated to academics.

Advisory discussions will explore the precepts found in the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio this school year, such as how to relate to others, how to treat others and stewardship of the planet.

“This year, you will be thinking about a simple question: ‘Am I creating in myself the person that I want to be?’” the older students asked. “We want you to think about this as it relates to your learning, dealing with others and in every decision you make.”
