Croton Harmon Programming Club Helps Students Stay Safe Online

The Programming Club connected with other students at the Croton Free Library to share tips about online safety.

From Croton- Harmon High School: Members of Croton-Harmon High School’s Programming Club, along with advisor and math teacher Soyoung Lim, connected with local seniors at the Croton Free Library to share tips for staying safe online.

The high school students’ seminar, “Financial Scams Targeting Seniors and How to Avoid Them,” highlighted that financial scams targeting seniors continue to increase, with seniors reportedly losing $3 billion through scams and cons in the last year.

After outlining some common examples of fraud, the students encouraged residents to just hang up their phones or shut their doors when they suspect scamming. They additionally offered prevention tips, including avoiding opening attachments in suspicious emails and providing personal or financial information over the phone. Finally, students offered resources for seniors to take advantage of if they suspect they have been victims of a scam.
