Croton-Harmon Teachers Celebrate Tenure Positions

From Croton-Harmon School District: Four Croton-Harmon School District teachers earning tenure were celebrated during a special board of education meeting on May 16.

“This is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edward R. Fuhrman Jr., who welcomed the teachers to the district’s teaching family.

Administrators who work closely with the four tenure recipients offered praise to the teachers before the board voted to award them tenure and present them with a certificate and apple.

Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School teacher Emma Akhonzadeh, PVC and Croton- Harmon High School teacher Sarah Campbell, PVC world language teacher Qi Song and Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School teacher Rebekah Rupp accepted the congratulations of the board and administration with their family members in attendance.

“Emma is such an amazing, caring person,” said PVC Principal Dr. Barbara Ulm. “She individualizes instruction for every child.”

PVC Assistant Principal Michael Plotkin noted that Campbell, an English as a Second Language teacher, “advocates for a population in our building that needs all of the advocacy it can get,” telling her, “Sarah – you should be very proud.”

Song, who teaches Mandarin at PVC, is always happy and has a great sense of humor, her administrators said.

“Nothing ever really flusters her… and she has high expectations for her students,” said Plotkin, who also praised Song for making a life for herself after coming to the U.S. from China. “I’m really happy for her and this night is another indication that she took a risk…and that’s what we want our kids to do.”

Rupp, a second-grade teacher at CET, always works to engage her students in learning, said Principal Kelly Maloney.

“Her kids are constantly moving while they’re learning,” said Maloney. “Not only is she a great teacher, she is a great colleague. She is a stand-up person.”

Board of Education President Iris Bugliosi said she hopes the teachers continue to serve the district for many years to come. “You are what matters,” she said. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
