Croton Mourns Scout Leader who Dies on Troop Trip

Herman Jaensch, 54, of Croton, died doing what he loved.

He was leading a troop of six Boy Scouts from Croton on a hiking expedition in the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico when he died suddenly in his sleep.

Channel 12 cites an apparent heart attack as the apparent cause, though autopsy results are pending from the August 13 death.

His 14-year-old son was reportedly among the traveling group. Jaensch also leaves behind a daughter.

“This is an extremely sad day for the Westchester-Putnam Council and the entire Scouting family,” Deric Wertz, assistant scout executive for the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America, was quoted by Lohud.com from a memo he sent out. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved in this situation. The health and safety of our Scouts and adult volunteers is our top priority.”

Jaensch was mourned this week with a wake in Ossining and funeral service in Briarcliff Manor. His full obituary is posted on Patch here, describing him as a proud Assistant Scout Master of Troop 28, an avid cyclist and bike enthusiast. He taught carpentry and science at Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers for over 20 years.

In lieu of flowers, his loved ones ask that people "continue Hermann's legacy" by contributing to BSA Troop 28, Croton, c/o Steven Schechter, 47 Darby Ave., Croton, NY 10520.
