Croton's Bravest Knock Down Garage Fire During Height of Village's Summerfest

From the Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department:

At 4:55 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, during the height of the village's annual Summerfest, Croton's Bravest were called to a report of smoke in a residence along the 60-block of Nordica Drive.

Within minutes, CFD units were responding and receiving an update from Croton Police that there was an active fire in the garage. Car 2081 (Chief Munson) arrived first and reported smoke showing from the garage of a two 1/2 story frame residence.

E118 & E119 arrived almost simultaneously, and Command had E118 take the attack position while E119 secured a hydrant. Personnel found a small fire in the garage, and the crew of E118 knocked it down using water extinguishers and a trash line. E119's crew was used as a "Truck Company" and conducted a search of the home for any fire extension.

E120, TL44, R18 were held on scene, and the Tankers from Croton, Millwood and Yorktown were cancelled en route. This was the first time this response of Tankers was used in this part of the village, after the department recently modified it based on known water pressure and volume issues in the area.

After speaking with the homeowner, he informed us that the fire was caused by putting what he thought was fully extinguished ashes from an outdoor fire pit in a plastic bag, then put it in his garage. We strongly advise all of our residents and website visitors to never assume your fire ashes are totally extinguished and to discard them outdoors in a proper container.

This home was lucky, and hopefully will shed some light on others how to avoid the same incident in their own home.
