Danes Celebrate Their Culture In Croton

Thunderstorms kindly waited until all the many weekend festivities were complete on Sunday from Peekskill's open art studios to Tarrytown's street fair.

In Croton, as crowds gathered in the upper village for their outdoor festival there was another large group of folks deeper in the woods. Unbeknownst to many there's a 40-acre retirement residency in the village with a very international flare.

The Danish Home, home to 18 folks who aren't necessarily Danish though the place aims to uphold the country's traditions, opens its grounds annually for a Grundlovsdag celebration for Danish Constitution Day. Many area Danish Americans come out -- as well as anyone else interested -- for the authentic food, music, crafts and beer from their homeland.

It was a grand day under tents and in the shade of pine trees and red barns, trying meatballs, open-faced sandwiches, pastries; perusing an art show; enjoying kids' crafts and games lead by the Montrose Girl Scouts (at work on their bronze awards); listening to the jazz and accordions and more in the central gazebo; and of course drinking Carlsberg beer.

I'm told the Christmas festival is lovely here as well so I look forward to returning for more.
