Educational Workshops Planned in Westchester on Healthy Living, Coping with Dementia

The Alzheimer's Association and Westchester Jewish Community Services will offer a series of educational programs for caregivers.

With nearly 40,000 people in the Hudson Valley affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the Alzheimer’s Association is partnering with Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) to offer a series of educational programs for caregivers.

“Healthy living for your brain and body: Tips from the latest research” will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 29, at Sinai Free Synagogue at 550 N. Columbus Ave. in Mount Vernon. This program provides information from the latest research on diet, nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engaging and offers hands-on tools to form a plan for healthy aging.

“Effective Communication Strategies” will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, October 6, at The Ambassador of Scarsdale at 9 Saxon Wood Road in White Plains. This program looks at how communication works when someone has dementia and offers strategies to connect and communicate at any stage of the disease.

“Understanding and responding to dementia-related behavior” will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, October 13, at the Ambassador of Scarsdale at 9 Saxon Wood Road in White Plains.This program offers tips on how to decode and react to common behaviors in people who have dementia.

“Legal & Financial planning for Alzheimer’s disease” will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, October 20, at the Ambassador of Scarsdale at 9 Saxon Woods Road in White Plains. This program provides an overview of legal and financial issues to consider following a dementia diagnosis.

“Dementia Conversations” will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, Novebmer 15, at Temple Shaaray Tefila at 89 Baldwin Road in Bedford Corners. This program offers tips and strategies for how to approach some of the difficult conversations that become necessary when someone has dementia.
