Electrical Problem May be to Blame for Ossining House Fire

The Red Cross is assisting 14 people who are homeless this afternoon after a fire tore through their home.

Investigators believe that an electrical problem may have been the cause of a fire that left 14 people homeless. The fire broke out at 80 Broadway in Ossining around 2:30 a.m. It took firefighters two hours to extinguish the flames. The fire broke out in the basement between the ceiling and the floor joist.

One firefighter, who had suffered exhaustion, was taken to the hospital. An infant who lived in the building was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. First responders believed that the infant might have suffered from smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross is assisting those who lived in the home. They are being taken care of at the Ossining Community Center this afternoon.

95 members of the Ossining Fire Department responded to the blaze early this morning. Croton, Yorktown, Briarcliff, Millwood and the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department assisted in the operation. "All of our members are truly professionals—well trained. There was a lot of clutter inside—a lot of personal belongings to navigate [through] the hallways and bedrooms in there. They did a phenomenal job," said Ossining Fire Chief Thomas Reddy.
