French Students Visit Croton-Harmon Schools

Croton-Harmon School District welcomed high school students from Lycée Jean Dautet in La Rochelle, France.

From Croton-Harmon School District: Croton-Harmon School District welcomed high school students from Lycée Jean Dautet in La Rochelle, France, for a stay that immersed them into school and life in Croton-on-Hudson.

During their two-week visit, the students stayed with local families and spent time in the village and at all three schools. They sat in on classes at the high school and middle school, including French classes, where they were able to practice their English and help Croton-Harmon students practice their French.

In a freshman French class, the visiting and Croton-Harmon students worked together to identify similarities and differences in their cultures and everyday lives, ranging from the types of games and sports they play to the words they use related to traveling.

“They picked a theme and created posters [in both French and English] to illustrate the various elements of their vocabularies,” said CHHS French teacher Alison Rhoades.

The Rochelais brought children’s books to read to each class at Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School. They also visited a physical education class, where they participated in a new initiative this year, Drumming for Fitness.
