Fundraisers on the Horizon for Croton 9/11 Memorial

9/11 Memorial task force members are spearheading numerous fundraisers to raise money for the project.

The volunteers spearheading Croton Landing's 9/11 memorial project are gearing up for multiple fundraisers. The drives will help raise money to pay for the memorial. The monument, called "Reaching Through the Shadow," will be built on the riverbank at Croton Landing. It was designed by two local architect/artists, James Rhodes and Lauren Davis. Both Rhodes and Davis are Croton-on-Hudson residents.

The task force that is working to erect the monument says it won't know the entire cost of the memorial until sometime in August. The group's next fundraiser will be September 10 at Cortlandt Family Day. Details on the Cortlandt Family Day fundraiser will be on the group's website soon. The next fundraiser will happen September 10 and 11 at the Toughman Triathalon at Croton Point Park. On September 18 there will be a dedicated fundraising event at Monteverde Restaurant in Cortlandt Manor. Additional details regarding the September 18 fundraiser will be made on the task force's website in the near future. There will also be a fundraiser at Buchanan's Family Day on September 24.

The memorial will be a sundial, utilizing steel from the World Trade Center's north tower. The sundial will be placed within a large boulder that already sits on the park's lawn — and is part of the natural landscape. There will also be a bronze figure of a woman who is reaching up to touch the steel. Indigenous plantings will surround the monument.

On February 10 the task force received the steal beams. They were transported to our area from a hanger at JFK airport. The beams are now being housed inside an undisclosed, local warehouse.
