In search of the sound of cicadas -- an unmistakable buzz that can fill a hot summer day -- I went to the winding reaches of Pond Meadow Road in Croton and parked the car, windows down, sitting in...almost absolute silence.
I had heard that the cicadas had been heard here and was apparently too late -- but this got me wondering:
Where is this cicada deluge I was expecting? There was a lot of hype leading to this 17-year event, so much so that I thought the sky would be clouded with the big bugs, the ground covered with crunchy shells, and the noise almost maddening. We even posted a recipe on Patch.
Now I'm forced to find a recording on SoundCloud -- take a listen here.
This group of public school folks in NYC has been tracking the bugs and introduces this fascinating sound, recorded on Staten Island, as such:
This summer the east coast brood of the magicicada or 17 year cicada will be emerging here in NY. The mating song that cicada is the loudest among insects, ranging from 90 to above 100 decibels (according to a chart from the National Acoustic Laboratories of Australia that sound level is from angle grinder/personal stereo/ride-on mower to pneumatic hammer/noisy disco/chainsaw) and is described as similar to the sounds made by UFOs in B movies. It is also species specific.
