OHS Places 2nd in Electric Car Competition
OHS' AP Physics Students and Engineering Club get their motor running at the Electrathon Challenge.
Ossining High finished second in the Novice Class Electrathon electric car competition. The school’s Engineering Club and AP Physics students worked together to build their electric racecar.
The Electrathon competition consisted of driving vehicles, powered by two 12-volt batteries, for as far as possible within a one-hour timeframe. The competition took place on a closed track in Lime Rock, Connecticut. Ossining High’s vehicle topped out at a speed of 28 mph.
Teachers Mark Scinta and Doug Albrecht organized the team. “Prior to the race the engineering club worked on designing the car to improve handling, maximize efficiency and aerodynamics,” said Albrecht. “They also installed many safety features required by the Electrathon organization.”

The Ossining team was allowed to charge their batteries once during the course of the one-hour June 3 race. All of the students driving the vehicle had their drivers license and students took turns driving the electric car, racing for about 20 minutes each.
“While at the race, our students were able to see other teams’ cars and teams in action. They learned from experienced teams,” said Scinta. “There were many interesting car designs, some car bodies were made of composite materials, others had advanced throttle and disk brakes that were foot operated. After this first experience, the Club has great ideas on how to improve the car next year.”

The school wants to make next year even better. They’re looking for area businesses to help sponsor their car in the Electrathon. "What we really need going forward is to partner up with some local sponsors,” added Albrecht. “The more successful cars at the race all had lighter components, or stronger frames, or better batteries. We are looking to go to the next level, but need a source of outside funding and expertise."
