Ossining Documentary and Discussion Series to Screen 9/11 Documentary

The series will offer a free screening of In Our Son's Name on September 15

From ProBono PR:

In commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the Ossining Documentary and Discussion Series will offer a free screening of In Our Son’s Name on September 15th, 2016 at 6:15 in Ossining Library’s Budarz Theatre. The Series, in its fourth season, hosts monthly screenings of documentaries on a wide variety of subjects, each followed by an in-depth discussion between the audience and a panel of three or more people intimately involved in the subject matter of the film.

September’s screening is especially notable because two of the panelists are also the main subjects of the documentary. In Our Son’s Name tells the story of Orlando and Phyllis Rodriguez whose son Greg perished in the attacks. Amid a national environment of anger, calls for revenge, and the rush to war, these two grieving parents stood up for peace, forgiveness, and compassion toward our enemies. They strongly opposed the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the death penalty of avowed 9/11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and even befriended his mother. They spoke against suspicion and violence directed toward Muslims. In seeking to understand the causes and consequences of violence they began to work with violent inmates at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. Also appearing on the panel will be Reverend Ron Lemmert, former chaplain at Sing Sing. Orlando and Phyllis Rodriguez will discuss their experiences and what’s happened since the film was released.

In Our Son's Name is a moving portrait of resilience, courage, and the healing power of reconciliation. Insightful interviews, verité footage, and striking archival images create a subtle, profound story told with disarming candor – a response to violence that challenges conventional concepts of justice and healing. As Shadd Maruna, Dean of the School of Criminal Justice atRutgers University said after a recent screening, “None of us could help but be moved, even transformed, by Phyllis and Orlando's remarkable courage and dignity.”

The Ossining Documentary and Discussion Series is organized by a committee of volunteers committed to bringing their “community together one film at a time.” September’s will be the group’s 38th screening. In Our Son’s Name is a moving film about 9/11, reconciliation and redemption. The public is invited to visit OssiningDocumentaries.org to learn of upcoming films on a wide variety of other topics. Screenings are always free and all are welcome.
