Ossining Groups Team Up for Kids Activities

Ossining children are taking charge and creating fun events for themselves and other youngsters in the community.

The Ossining Communities that Care and the Ossining Department of Recreation and Parks recently combined forces to provide more local activities for children in the Village and Town. The two groups have formed the Junior Recreation Advisory Committee (JRAC).

The JRAC has a slew of events planned for youngsters this summer. The events are the result of input from Ossining students. The group has already held two events. The first was a movie screening of the film Jaws inside the Aquatics Center pool on July 8. JRAC also brought 25 students to a bowling alley in White Plains on July 15.

"We are so excited about the newly formed middle school Rec. advisory, as it is giving a voice to the middle school students who are working directly with our Recreation Superintendent Henry Atterbury, to create and organize activities that the teens want to do," said Alice Joselow, the coordinator of Ossining Communities that Care. "This is an opportunity to create healthy alcohol free programs, while giving teens the opportunity to learn how to plan and organize events."

This week's event is titled "Come Fly a Kite." It will happen tomorrow from 7-9:30 p.m at the Louis Engel Water Spray Park. The park is located at the south end of the train station. Participants will build and fly their own kites at the waterfront. There will also be music, food, water balloons and dancing. Anyone interested in participating can call the Recreation Center at 941-3189.

The Recreation Department is encouraging children to speak out about what recreational activities they would like to see in Ossining. You child can do so by joining the JRAC. When kids join the committee, they will have the chance to help plan future events. For more information just head over to the Recreation Department's website by clicking here.

Tomorrow's kite flying event and future events are open to 5th graders who are attending AMD this fall. Students who were 6th-8th graders at AMD last year can also take part.
