Ossining Police: Beware Phone Scam

Word of warning from local police: the phone scam spreading throughout the country has again hit the village of Ossining.

Village of Ossining Police Lt. William Sullivan reports that two residents in the last several days received text messages that a loved one or a relative was in a car accident or arrested, and someone must wire them money for their release.

Sullivan linked these cases to the recent kidnapping threat in Irvington, and what is "happening all over the country."

He said believe the scam originates out of Florida, and he wants to warn residents: "don't send any money."

Last year, a similar scam happened to befall senior citizens in Ossining, who sent out $13,000 thinking their relative had been arrested.

This time, they did not target seniors, Sullivan said, noting that it seems totally random who the culprits call or text, as they perhaps just go through any available records in phone books or online.
