Snow, Sleet Could Kick Off Overnight Precipitation In The HV

A hazardous outlook has been issued for part of the region.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — There is a low probability for widespread hazardous weather across Dutchess and Ulster counties, the National Weather Service said in the outlook it issued Wednesday morning.

"While precipitation may start as a burst of snow and sleet across northern parts of the region and some of the hillier terrain it will quickly turn to over to rain," Alex Marra of Hudson Valley Weather said on Facebook, "the exception will be across the higher terrain of the Catskills."

However, even the chance of precipitation diminishes in the lower Hudson Valley; in southern Westchester, there's only a 20 percent chance of rain Wednesday night and Thursday.

The reason is a quick-hitting storm bringing "a mixed bag of wintry precipitation from parts of New York state to New England Wednesday night to Thursday," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

Motorists should anticipate a slippery and slow morning commute on parts of the New York Thruway and portions of Interstate 84, he said. However, for much southeastern New York only spotty rain or a passing shower is in store from the storm system and trailing cold front from Wednesday night to Thursday.

Then it's going to be colder.

"Temperatures will generally range from 5 to 10 degrees below the historical average," Sosnowski said. "Typical highs during the second weekend of November range from the lower 40s in northern Maine to the mid-50s around New York City."

It'll be dry, though, a welcome change after eight weekends with rain, and good news for Veterans Day ceremonies.
