HUDSON VALLEY, NY — While an air quality advisory remains in place, air pollution has lessened and the region is ranked "moderate." That's the good news. What's not so good is the forecast, which features thunderstorms and heavy rain before and after a storm front comes through.

"Rainfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour in some locations as the system moves along on Sunday from the southern Appalachians and mid-Atlantic to eastern New York and central and western New England from Sunday night to early Monday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

  • For Dutchess and Ulster counties, the hazardous outlook starts now and goes deep into next week:

Showers and thunderstorm are expected this afternoon into this evening. Any thunderstorm will be capable of producing heavy downpours, which may result in ponding of water in urban, low-lying and poor drainage areas. Isolated flash flooding is possible.

There is a chance of thunderstorms again on Saturday. More widespread showers and thunderstorms are also expected on Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms on Sunday will contain heavy rainfall, which may once again result in flooding of urban and low lying areas. Flash flooding is possible for areas that see repeated heavy downpours and a Flood Watch for flash flooding could be needed. In addition, there will continue to be a chance for thunderstorms Monday through Thursday, mainly in the afternoon and evening hours.

  • For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester, the hazardous outlook is just for Sunday:

Showers and thunderstorms moving into the area will be capable of producing heavy downpours. This may result in flooding of urban, low-lying or poor drainage areas, and small streams and creeks. At this time, the best chance for heavy rainfall will be Sunday afternoon and night as a frontal wave along a stalled out boundary potentially moves into the area. There is still a decent amount of uncertainty where the axis of heaviest rainfall will be.

Across the region, the greatest risk of flooding downpours should occur from Sunday evening to after dark, said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.

"The heaviest rain may slide just to the west and north of Boston later Sunday night to Monday, but commuters over the Hudson Valley of New York and in western, central and northern New England could experience significant travel delays for the Monday morning drive," AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva said.
