Tree-mendous Ossining
The village is cataloging historical and remarkable trees. First on the new list? An oak named Nathaniel.

The first tree to be placed on the ’s List of Significant Trees, Nathaniel is a towering 200-year-old, 75-foot white oak that resides in the yard of former Ossining Mayor Miguel Hernandez.
“Trees are among the oldest species of plant life in the world," said Hernandez, who nominated it. "They should be celebrated and honored, and people should take care of them. Particularly if they have a tree that is of a great age."
It’s that sentiment that has prompted residents to suggest a dozen other trees be placed on the Village’s Significant Tree List. Village of Ossining Environmental Advisory Council Chair Dorian Burden says the Significant Tree List was created during an update to the village code a few years ago.

“It’s not about creating a list to prevent anyone from cutting something down. It’s just a list to create an inventory of what we have, “ said Burden.
The Environmental Advisory Council is asking people to let them know about Village trees that are of historical significance or are remarkable in other ways.
