4 Men Rescued From Disabled Boat In Long Island Sound

The boat operator was unsure of his location and did not know how to light a flare, police say.

Four men were rescued from a disabled boat after the boat operator could not pinpoint his location in the Long Island Sound on Sunday night, authorities say.

Police received a 911 call for a disabled 16-foot Sea Ray Bowrider with four men on board off of Bayville at 8:45 p.m. The caller, however, was unsure of his location, did not know how to light a flare and was having difficulty communicating due to a language barrier.

Officers explained how to light a flare to 911 operators, who relayed that to the operator of the disabled boat, who successfully lit the flare.
