7 Things To Do This Fourth of July Weekend In Brooklyn

Some suggestions for celebrating Independence Day in Brooklyn, including an infamous hot dog eating contest and an outdoor love festival.

BROOKLYN, NY — You might not be in the mood to celebrate the nation this weekend but, patriotism aside, there's still good food and events to be had this Fourth of July in New York City.

While many of the city's most holiday-centric events are in Manhattan, namely the annual Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show, you can still get citywide views of the fireworks (more on that below) or make the most of the holiday without leaving Brooklyn.

Most of the borough's Fourth of July focused activities happen at Coney Island, including Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest and firework displays.

1. Go to a cookout. Options abound borough-wide, like this East Flatbush BBQ set to include good food, games (cards and beer pong alike) and music.

2. Grill in Prospect Park. It is Brooklyn's backyard after all, but make sure to only BBQ in designated areas and follow park rules.Groups of 20 or more, for instance, technically require a permit.

3. Or watch someone else gorge themselves on food. Specifically, hot dogs, at Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. The infamous event is returning to its flagship outpost at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues in Coney Island after two years of pandemic-related adjustments. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. on Monday (learn more here).

4. Attend a brewery birthday party. If you're feeling festive, Coney Island Brewery, located at 1904 Surf Avenue, is hosting a seven-hour, music-filled Fourth of July Party starting 3 p.m. Saturday.

5. Watch fireworks by the ocean. Every Friday night through Aug. 25th, The Alliance for Coney Island sets up a firework display starting at 9:45 p.m. over Coney Island's Riegelmann Boardwalk.

6. Or watch the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks show from Brooklyn. Viewing spots include Transmitter Park, Newton Barge Playground and Marsha P. Johnson State Park.

7. Dance away the night (and weekend). There are a few big events this holiday weekend, chief among them the Summer of Love at House of Yes, billed as the venue's "largest outdoor festival series ever!"
