A Photo Sneak Peek: The Tombs of Green-Wood Cemetery

Come and visit the tombs and mausoleums—most of which have never before been open to the public—where some of the most famous of the cemetery's 560,000 permanent residents are laid to rest.

Green-Wood Cemetery will open the doors of its most famous and ornate tombs and mausoleums for the first time ever to the public this weekend.

This rare opportunity is part of the 2011 Open House New York weekend. Visitors will be able to see inside the family mausoleums of Henry Englehard Steinway (piano maker, and the biggest mausoleum with 256 interments), Stephen Whitney (one of the wealthiest men of the 19th century) Charles Feltman (Coney Island hot dog king), the catacombs and more.

Access to the cemetery grounds, which is on Fifth Avenue at 25th Street, is free and includes a map of the locations of the tombs and catacombs. Green-Wood’s trolley will run between 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on October 15 and 16 and will provide "hop on, hop off" service to the various locations.
