Another Citi Bike Fee Hike Just Went Into Effect

Annual memberships will now cost $155, up $6 from last year — but Citi Bike says the money is needed to help pay for improvements.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — It just got a little more expensive to tap into NYC’s expanding bike-share network.

Citi Bike’s annual membership fee increased to $155 today, a $6 increase from last year. In 2014, the price jumped from $95 to $149, as reported by the Daily News.

Citi Bike spokeswoman Dani Simons said the fee hikes help “ensure we are keeping pace with the increased costs” of system upgrades and expansion.

In 2015, Citi Bike improved its software and bike technology, Simons said, while adding a total of 140 new stations in Brooklyn, upper Manhattan and Queens.

Citi Bike hopes to put 12,000 shared bicycles on the road by 2017 — a 50 percent increase from the network’s original size.

NYCHA residents can still purchase an annual membership for $60, Simons said, and residents can use their IDNYC to get 15 percent off their first year’s membership.

Daily Citi Bike trips routinely surpassed 30,000 during the last three months of 2015, according to company data — a significant increase over the same period in 2013, the year the program launched.
