Battle Continues Over Proposed Expansion of Park Slope Beer Hall

The KBH Bierhall on St. Marks Place has been pushing for a permit to serve alcohol outdoors

PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — Some Park Slopers have continued voicing objections to a planned outdoor seating area for The KBH Bierhalle, but the bar's owner says they don't speak for the entire community.

The business, located at 84 St Marks Pl., came before Community Board 6's licensing committee on Monday, asking for a permit to serve alcohol outdoors. But the application was tabled in the face of community opposition, according to CB6 director Craig Hammerman.

Hammerman said "dozens" of locals came to the meeting to object to the plan, citing past issued they'd had with noise caused by The KBH.

But owner Marquis Williams told Patch that he's spent months in conversations with community members, and has already adjusted his plans to accommodate concerns.

Williams said he wants to place 22 seats in a portion of a side lot he owns, where patrons would be able to sit and drink until 8:30 p.m. (changed from his original proposal of 11 p.m.) No amplified music would play in the space, Williams said, adding that he's never had significant problems with his neighbors before.

The businessman said those who remain in opposition to the plan don't represent the whole community, and that he's received support from other locals.

"I'm open to working with people, but some people unfortunately are taking it to a different level and being very erroneous with their claims," he said.

Williams said he will seek the approval of CB6's executive committee for the expansion. The committee meets on August 8.

At the same Monday meeting, the licensing committee approved new liquor licenses for new businesses at 517 Court St. in Carroll Gardens (the former location of Teaffee, according to Pardon Me For Asking) and a business 191 5th Ave. in Park Slope (the former location of Bierkraft, reports DNAinfo).

Finally, on July 28, CB6's land use committee will consider applications by property owners wishing to adjust buildings in landmarked areas. According to CB6:

  • The owner of 368 Clinton St. in Cobble Hill will seek permission for the "renovation of existing 3-story rear yard extension, addition of deck and conversion of windows to French doors at second story, replacing iron railing and adding masonry at roof of extension, and replacement front gate with wooden door at front garden entrance"
  • The owner of 536 1st Street in Park Slope will seek permission "for replacement of rear yard extension including increased fenestration"
  • The owner of 564 9th St. in Park Slope will seek permission "for a new front entrance door, replacement rear yard bay window, new rear yard wooden deck and stairs and new HVAC equipment on roof"
  • The owner of 566 10th St. in Park Slope is seeking permission for the "enlargement of an existing two-story rear yard addition, a new partial floor rooftop addition and new HVAC equipment on roof"
  • The owner of 682 10th St. in Park Slope is seeking permission to construct a "new 1-story rear yard addition with deck"

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at the Old First Reformed Church, located at 729 Carroll St.
