You didn’t exactly need a thermometer to figure out that, yep, it was pretty hot outside Tuesday. But now it’s official, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures across New York City broke records Tuesday for historical highs on September 8.
In Central Park, for example, it reached 97 degrees, where the previous high was 93 back in 1919. LaGuardia hit 94, beating 1945’s high of 91.

On Long Island, Islip reached 91 degrees, two higher than the 89 degrees recorded there in 2010.
New York was not alone, either, in Tuesday’s heat wave. Newark hit a record 98 degrees. Boston was at a balmy record of 96. And in Baltimore, schools closed two hours early Tuesday and after school activities were cancelled for heat concerns.
