The Historic Brooklyn Lyceum Is Becoming a Gym

Gym's interior will be "reminiscent of its original public bathhouse days."

The Brooklyn Lyceum, a historic landmark and ancient bathhouse on 4th Avenue in Park Slope, has been leased by Blink Fitness.

According to Greystone, the property developer: ”The building’s exterior is currently being restored to its original landmark status while the interior, totaling 16,700 square feet, will be maintained with a commercial use reminiscent of its original public bathhouse days.”

Residents have long been pressuring Greystone to fill the Lyceum with shops, not condos.

“Once we changed gears from our initial residential development plan to single-use commercial for the Lyceum,” says Greystone head Jeffrey Simpson in a statement, “we knew a tenant such as Blink would be ideal for both the interior space and as an added amenity to the neighborhood as a whole.”

The Blink Fitness chain’s shtick is that it offers a clean, happy gym experience for a super low price. ($25 per month for access to 50 locations in New York and New Jersey.) Its motto is ”we put mood above muscle” and its gyms are known for their peppy, modern interior design.

Brooklyn already has a few Blink locations in Brooklyn, but none on the northwest side.

“By restoring and maintaining the exterior beauty of the iconic Lyceum, Park Slope residents can enjoy both the aesthetics of the building and the functional use of the space inside,” Simpson says.

Greystone is also building a new 12-story apartment tower in the lot next to the Lyceum.
