PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — A long-awaited Park Slope pedestrian plaza will be occupied by trucks for a couple of weeks amid construction, organizers said.

The Fourth Street Plaza, a small stretch of Fourth Street near Fifth Avenue, has been closed to traffic round-the-clock since July 8, instead serving as a public play-slash-event space.

As of Monday, though, a crane and some trucks will set up on the street for two weeks as crews work on construction projects at an abutting middle school, according to Joanna Tallantire, executive director of the Park Slope Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District.

Tallantire told Patch that the plaza will still remain closed to non-construction vehicles during this time.

The community space, though, is accommodating the flow of trucks and ensuring neighbors' safety by moving public picnic benches onto a nearby curb, she said.

Construction, which will take place Monday through Friday, should wrap up on Aug. 12, according to Tallantire.

Saturday's beloved Fifth Avenue Open Street and Sunday's greenmarket on the plaza will occur as usual during construction, she said.

The Fourth Street Plaza is set to remain closed to cars through Labor Day, but Tallantire previously said the pedestrianized space could become permanent soon after — a dream of many Park Slopers, Patch reported.
