Police Blotter: Burglar Steals $4K in Jewelry from Carroll St. Home

Apartment Looted for Jewels 

A burglar broke into a woman’s Carroll Street apartment and stole over $4,000 in jewelry and electronics on Aug. 9.

The 53-year-old victim told police that she left her apartment, between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West, at around 8:45 a.m. When she returned home at 10 p.m., she found that her front door was ajar and noticed her house was looted. The burglar stole a pair of platinum earrings with diamonds, three white and yellow gold necklaces, a pair of diamond earrings, more jewelry and an iPad for a total of $4,249. 

Barfly Purse Snatch 

A thief snatched a woman’s purse from a Fourth Avenue bar on Aug. 9.

The 28-year-old victim told police that she hung her purse, worth $150, on a hook behind her seat at Cherry Tree, between St. Marks Place and Bergen Street, around 11:30 p.m. Then, a crook ran up and snatched her designer bag and ran out of the bar. The crook got away with a $50 wallet, her passport, driver’s license, debit cards, credit card and a make up bag. 

Nein, Danke Crook

A thief snatched a tourist’s bag from the lobby of a hotel on Butler Street on Aug. 9.

The 53-year-old victim told police that he was visiting from Germany and staying at the Holiday Inn Express between Nevins Street and Third Avenue, when he placed his bag on the back of a chair in front of the hotel where his wife was sitting at around 8 p.m. He went inside the hotel to get a drink and when he came back, it was gone. The crook got away with $700 worth of goods, including $100 in cash, expensive glasses, clothing, headphones, credit card and his German driver’s license. 

Construction Site Heist

A crook stole over $6,000 worth of tools from a construction site on Second Avenue and 10th Street on Aug. 10.

One construction worker told police that he locked up the site, on the northwest corner of 10th Street and Second Avenue, at around 3 p.m. When he returned to the site on Aug. 11 at 8:15 a.m., he found that someone had cut a two-foot high and one-foot wide hole in the wooden gate and did not touch the locks. The crook stole $6,440 in tools, including a $1,400 torque wrench, a demolition saw, grinders, hammer drills, and more. 

U-Thief

A thief stole a U-Haul trailer from a Fourth Avenue rental place after failing a background check on Aug. 11.

The U-Haul employee said that a customer came in the store, between Fifth and Sixth streets, at around 1:05 p.m. after he attached the trailer to his car and asked to rent it for one hour. The employee did a background check on the man and the system alerted him not to rent the trailer to the customer. The employee told the man about the results and asked him to remove the trailer from his Ford Expedition. The man walked out of the store after agreeing to take it off his black SUV, but then he hopped into his car and drove away.
