Possession Of Marijuana In Brooklyn Decriminalized In Small Quantities

Brooklyn potheads need not worry as long as they are well-behaved.

Brooklyn DA Ken Thompson said he will no longer be prosecuting marijuana smokers for possession provided they have no previous criminal history or have been busted for weed before.

The DA said in a memo made public by the New York Post Wednesday that marijuana laws disproportionately hurt youths of color, especially those without previous records.

"When a defendant has neither a criminal record nor an open arrest or warrant, it makes no sense for the criminal justice system, including a District Attorney’s Office, to devote its scarce resources to lengthy case processing,” the memo read.

Marijuana users are not off the hook completely: The deal is, any person caught with less than 25 grams of weed will not be criminally prosecuted, but will have to pay a $100 and not get caught again.
