Teen Cyclist Hit, Killed By Car In South Slope: NYPD

The Sunset Park resident was going east on 23 Street when he was struck at 5 Avenue by a car going south.

SOUTH SLOPE, NY — A 14-year-old boy riding his bicycle in South Slope was hit and killed by a BMW Sedan Saturday evening, the NYPD said.

The NYPD said they responded to a report of a bicyclist struck at 5 Avenue and 24 Street around 5:45 p.m. and when officers arrived the boy was unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to his head and his body. The boy was transported to Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the boy was riding his bicycle heading east on 23 Street and was struck on 5 Avenue by the BMW, which was going south. The driver remained on the scene and was taken to Methodist Hospital for an evaluation.

The New York Daily News reported that the car traveled down the block, dragging the boy and only stopped when an off-duty cop maneuvered his vehicle to block the area. A surveillance video obtained by the News shows the cyclist crossing the street against the light before he is hit by the BMW.

The boy reportedly worked as a delivery boy for a local restaurant. Police identified the boy as 14-year-old Edwin Ajacalon, of Sunset Park.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.
