7 Arrested; 1 Charged Under Leandra's Law In Suffolk Sobriety Checkpoint: Police

One person was charged with drug-impaired driving, another had three children aged, 13, 15, and 16 in their car, Suffolk cops say.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Seven people were arrested on alcohol-related charges, including one person for aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra's Law, in an overnight sobriety checkpoint in Patchogue, Suffolk police said Saturday.

Robert Jimenez, 43, of Ronkonkoma, was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years old or younger for having a 13-year-old child in the vehicle at the time, a felony, according to police.

Jimenez was additionally charged with driving while intoxicated and three counts of acting in a manner injurious to a child for having children in the vehicle at the time, ages 13, 15, and 16, police said.

A 39-year-old from Patchogue was charged with operating a motor vehicle impaired by drugs.

  • 36-year-old from Babylon.
  • 29-year-old from Northport.
  • A 25-year-old from Holbrook.
  • A 33-year-old from Islip.
  • A 25-year-old from Sayville.

The arrests came as officers from the police department's Highway Patrol Bureau conducted a joint operation Sobriety Checkpoint with the county's deputy sheriffs at the intersection of Waverly Avenue and Sunrise Highway North Service Road from 11:10 p.m. Friday until 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The checkpoint was part of an ongoing enforcement crackdown targeting alcohol and drug-impaired driving.

A total of 523 vehicles went through the checkpoint.

The seven arrestees will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
