Suffolk 'Serial Burglar' Gets 10 Years In Prison: DA

DA says, "Everyone deserves a second chance, but I will not allow the same individuals to continuously commit crimes" in Suffolk.

RIVERSIDE, NY — A serial burglar from Bellport was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday, Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney's office said.

Arnaldo Marcano, 42, of Bellport, had been released on parole for less than two years after having been sentenced to 19 years in prison for multiple prior burglary convictions before burglarized a home in Bellport, Tierney's office said.

Tierney said that recidivist offenders such as Marcano "pose a serious risk to the safety of our communities."

"Everyone deserves a second chance, but I will not allow the same individuals to continuously commit crimes in Suffolk County and just get a slap on the wrist," he said. "We will hold you accountable, and seek substantial prison sentences.”

Marcano broke the window of a Bellport home and went inside where he stole money before running away on Feb. 24 at around 12:25 a.m., Tierney's office said, adding, Suffolk police officers Edward Spillett and Matthew Spilotros of the 5th Precinct in Patchogue saw Marcano walking down the street and apprehended him after realizing he matched the description given by neighbors.

Marcano was out on parole for multiple convictions from 2004, including first-degree burglary, and six counts of second-degree burglary. On Dec. 7, 2004, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison, and was released from prison to parole on Sept. 23, 2021, and also, in 2000, Marcano had been convicted of third-degree attempted burglary in which he was sentenced to nine months in jail.

Marcano, who pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in May, will have five years of post-release supervision.

His attorney, Jason Bassett of Central Islip, declined comment.
